QBS Business Breakfast Insights: Global Trade Tariffs – Opportunity or Threat?

22 April, 2025

In today’s turbulent geopolitical and economic climate, global trade tariffs are at the forefront of policy debate and business strategy. Are they safeguarding domestic interests, or undermining global commerce and competitiveness?

Queen’s Business School invites you to explore this timely issue at the next QBS Business Breakfast Insights event on Thursday, 15 May 2025 at 8:30 am. This engaging morning session will examine whether trade tariffs represent a strategic opportunity or a looming threat to economic growth, supply chains, and international business.

Distinguished Speakers

An expert panel drawn from the worlds of finance, international business, policy, and academia will provide invaluable insights:

  • Richard Ramsey – Professor of Practice in Economic Policy, Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Business School
One of Northern Ireland’s most recognisable economic commentators, Richard brings a wealth of experience in both public and private sectors. Formerly Chief Economist for Ulster Bank, his deep understanding of regional and global economic trends offers a sharp lens on how tariffs influence market dynamics, inflation, and competitiveness.
  • Lorraine Nelson – Partner & Head of Tax, BDO Northern Ireland
Lorraine leads BDO Northern Ireland’s tax practice and brings over two decades of experience advising businesses on cross-border tax strategy, customs compliance, and the implications of shifting trade policies. She will offer practical insights into how businesses can manage the tax and operational impact of trade tariffs, particularly in a post-Brexit environment.
  • Patrick Collins – Chief Financial Officer, Belfast Distillery Company
As CFO of a fast-growing spirits company with export ambitions, Patrick offers a hands-on perspective on how tariffs affect supply chain decisions, pricing strategies, and global expansion. His real-world experience highlights the challenges and adaptations required by SMEs navigating complex international trade conditions.
  • Gareth Hagan – Chief Executive Officer, OCO Global
A recognised expert in international market entry and investment, Gareth leads OCO Global, a consultancy specialising in international trade, foreign direct investment, and economic development. With experience advising governments and multinationals alike, he will explore how tariffs shape investment flows and influence global competitiveness.
  • Dr. Michael Aldous – Senior Lecturer in International Business, Entrepreneurship and Marketing, Queen’s Business School
An academic with a passion for global business strategy and historical trade patterns, Dr. Aldous will frame the discussion with insights into how businesses have historically adapted to trade barriers—and what lessons can be drawn for today's volatile environment. He will also moderate the session, guiding dialogue between speakers and audience members.
