Professor Mark Thornton Burnett

School of Arts, English and Languages

Mark Thornton Burnett, FEA, MRIA, is Professor of Renaissance Studies, Founder of the Sir Kenneth Branagh Archive, and Fellow of the George J. Mitchell Institute, Queen’s University Belfast. He is the author of Shakespeare and World Cinema (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2013) and 'Hamlet' and World Cinema (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2019). He is also the editor of the Arden Shakespeare series, ‘Shakespeare and Adaptation’. Research focus: Shakespeare and adaptation, global Shakespeares, Shakespeare and world cinema, and Shakespeare and Asian cinemas.

Public outreach & key achievements

In 2016, Burnett co-ordinated the cultural initiative, 'Shakespeare Lives Across the Island', working with the British Council and other partners on over one hundred cultural events in NI/ROI commemorating the birth of Shakespeare. The initiative was accompanied by an exhibition, 'Shakespeare Lives Through Kenneth Branagh on Stage and Screen', which toured Hong Kong and numerous community venues and educational institutions.

In 2023, Burnett co-chaired 'Commemorating 100 Years of Indian Shakespeare on Film', a collaborative online event delivered between the Asian Shakespeare Association and Áù¾ÅÉ«Ìà Belfast.
