Dr Edel Lamb

School of Arts, English and Languages

Her research focuses on Shakespeare, drama and early modern children’s literary cultures. She has received fellowships from the Folger Shakespeare Library (2024), the Leverhulme Trust (2021-2022), the Australian Research Council (2009-2012), the Irish Research Council (2008-2009) and the Huntington Library (2004) to support her work in this area.

She is the author of two Palgrave monographs - Performing Childhood in the Early Modern Theatre: The Children’s Playing Companies, 1599-1613 (2009) and Reading Children in Early Modern Culture (2018) – and is currently completing her third monograph on writing by early modern girls. Her research has also been published as chapters and journal articles.

Research Interests

Open to PhD applications in the fields of:

  • early modern studies, particularly Shakespeare and Renaissance performance cultures
  • age, childhood and gender in early modern literature and culture
  • girlhood and literature
  • early modern literature (especially drama) and civil unrest, including protest, riot.

Public outreach & key achievements

  • Co- curator of (with Prof. Jennifer Duggan [University South Eastern Norway] and Asst. Prof. Lois Burke [Tilburg University]) and contributor to online exhibition 'Girls Transforming Texts' for the Girl Museum (2025)
  • Co-organiser (with Prof. Fiona Magowan QUB) of Belfast Children's Festival Industry Event on Peacebuilding, the Arts and the Participation of Children and Young People (2024)
  • Organiser of an event for children and young people at the Ulster Museum,
