Professor Gerd Wagner

School of Pharmacy

Professor Wagner joined Queen’s University in October 2019 from King’s College London, where he was a founding member of the new Department of Chemistry.

His research is focussed on the development of chemical tools to address fundamental challenges in biology, biotechnology and medicine. He is particularly interested in the role of complex glycans and carbohydrates in infection, inflammation and cancer. Current research themes are concerned with:

(1) Covalent inhibitors and probes to study antimicrobial resistance

(2) Chemical glycoengineering of biopharmaceuticals

(3) Carbohydrate-active enzymes as targets for drug discovery

Research Interests

Research projects in the Wagner group are highly interdisciplinary: they typically involve

  • Small molecule synthesis (e.g., carbohydrates, nucleotides, heterocycles)
  • Protein biochemistry, enzymology and bioassays

We collaborate widely with research groups in academia, industry, and research institutes, and projects usually include placement opportunities.

Current Research Opportunities

  • Chemical glycoengineering of therapeutic antibodies
  • Novel P2Y receptor ligands for drug discovery
  • Covalent inhibitors of a bacterial enzyme as novel antimicrobial resistance breakers
  • Breaking the resistance: alternative approaches to antibiotics discovery

Public outreach & key achievements

Professor Wagner has developed and led workshops for Native Scientist, an award-winning, non-profit network of international scientists. The mission of the network is to tackle educational disadvantage through science outreach and to promote science and language integrated learning. (nativescientist.com)
