Dr Emma McErlean

School of Pharmacy

Dr McErlean’s research focuses on the design and development of cell penetrating peptide delivery systems for gene therapy targeting neurological diseases and for ex vivo adoptive cellular therapies. Her work brings together a unique combination of expertise in nanomedicine, drug delivery, biotechnology and biopharmaceuticals.

Research Interests

Open to PhD applications in the field of nano-drug delivery, biopharmaceutics, nucleic acid therapies and ex vivo cellular therapies.

  • Development of nanomedicines for cancer and neurological diseases
  • Design of non-viral delivery systems
  • Delivery of nucleic acids (mRNA, siRNA, ASOs, etc)

  • Non-invasive intranasal delivery of nucleic acid therapeutics for retinal disease using a novel peptide carrier
  • Formulation of hybrid peptide-lipid nanoparticle formulations for targeted nucleic acid delivery
  • Intranasal delivery of nucleic acid therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases using a novel peptide carrier
  • In vivo CAR-T engineering using targeted peptide delivery systems
  • In vivo CAR-T engineering using targeted peptide delivery systems for treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL)
