My work focuses on the relationship between law, transitional justice and conflict transformation including; apologies, truth recovery, politically motivated prisoners, ex-combatants, victims, amnesties, human rights, restorative justice and the role lawyers in conflict.

Public outreach & key achievements

  • Fellow of the British Academy, Member of the Royal Irish Academy and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences
  • Winner of the QUB 2016 Post-graduate Supervisor of the Year Award in QUB's Faculty of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences (student nominated)
  • Winner of the British Society of Criminology Book of the Year award, the Socio-Legal Studies Association Article of the Year Award (x3 times)
  • Previously named by Arena magazine in 2008 as one of the UK’s top 10 influential ‘young intellectuals’ for work on the Northern Ireland peace process
  • Director of a number of ongoing research and impact related projects on dealing with the past in Northern Ireland and the role of apologies in addressing past harms
