We are committed to providing a child centred setting where children can learn in a safe and caring environment, within which they are stimulated through play. Equipment used both indoors and outdoors will provide a range of opportunities for children to enhance their learning, growth and development. Observations are recorded and used to identify childrens individual stages of development. These observations are then used to inform monthly and weekly plans constructed to meet the childrens needs and encourage their interests. Under Standard 15 of the Minimum Standards staff have a statutory duty and legal requirement to complete observations and plans. It should be noted that observations and plans may be accessed by Trust Staff at any time. Childcare Services at Queens will endeavour to ensure that all equipment is appropriate for the age and stage of development of all children in the setting. Staff carry out daily risk assessments to ensure that equipment is safe for purpose. Any defective/damaged equipment will be immediately removed from use and reported to the Management Team for repairs/maintenance. (Reference Policy on Maintenance and Replacement of Play Equipment.) Furthermore, regular cleaning of all play resources is carried out and recorded by staff. Outdoor play opportunities will be offered each day for both planned and unplanned sessions, along with indoor physical activities and childcare staff recognise the outdoor play area as an extension to the indoor environment. Children are encouraged and given opportunities throughout the day to move freely in clearly defined play areas and childcare staff will ensure that the children can achieve this safely. The children will also be encouraged to express themselves freely and explore their natural curiosity throughout their play. Staff will foster decision making by giving the children the opportunity to choose play resources and activities. The childrens views will be sought wherever possible and respected and valued by staff. The children will never be forced to engage in any activities but gently encouraged to do so and activities will be completed at the individual childs own pace. A softly furnished story corner is also available in each playroom for those children who wish to rest or relax.
